| The coolant flow is from the block through those holes and then returns to the radiator. When looking at the size of the holes you can see why it's very important not to use too much silicone when working on the coolant system. The additional sealer that gets squeezed from around inlet and outlet water pipes WILL get lodged in those holes and restrict water passage through the heads. I believe many people that have tried everything to fix overheating problems and still have them could be suffering from these passages being plugged. When I overhauled my engine and removed the heads, I found about half the ports plugged with strings of red silicone from the previous work performed before I bought the car. I also found pieces of the same red silicone lodged in the turbo coolant pipes. So needless to say it's very important to use sealer sparingly.
